Update: Wyoming PD continues its investigation with the assistance of district and school administration. We have moved up a previous plan to contract with DK Security for evening security guards at Lee Middle & High School beginning January 5 when staff and students return from break.
On Wednesday evening, December 17, prior to 8 pm, our boys basketball players were leaving the gym for home. Four of them were walking towards Engle Street (two on the sidewalk and two in the upper parking lot) when gun shots were fired apparently from the direction of the Havana Avenue and Engle Street intersection. The boys responded and ran back to the gym where it was determined that one of them had been hit in the upper leg. Police and emergency personnel were called to the school. I was notified at approximately the same time by the athletic director who had just left the school. The victim was transported to the hospital and is expected to fully recover.
Police officers, including Chief Carmody, have been on the scene throughout the evening conducting an investigation. School security surveillance video is being reviewed for evidence. We have already received at least one tip that is being followed up on by law enforcement and our administrative team will continue to support the official investigation.
We are planning on school being open Thursday and have been assured that additional police presence will be on site throughout the day as the investigation continues. Our counselors and social workers will be available to any students who may want to meet with them.
In addition, we will be reviewing safety protocols for evening events and practices as well as lighting around our campus. Our number one concern right now is the safety of all of our staff and students, but at the same time we plan to do everything within our power to assist the police in their investigation of this matter until the individual or individuals involved are apprehended.
Parents and students are encouraged to contact the Lee High School administrative staff or Wyoming Police Department if you have any information you feel might help with the investigation.
